Minimum University Entry Grade of C+ to be Reviewed

2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) candidates are yet to know their fate as the state Varsities plan to review the minimum entry requirements or grade.

Dreams to undertake certain courses by most of the students will certainly fade should the universities review minimum entry grades as currently planned.

The proposal to review the entry grade comes at a time when there are so many controversies concerning the university funding by the government.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu declared last week that the government will withdraw funding of university education, a declaration he later on denied. He Urged universities to come up with modalities that will enable them generate their own income.

Experts have revealed that the review will affect the current class as they will be on the receiving end. Further, the review is likely to go up from the current C+ so that the cost of government funding is lowered.

Many public universities are currently facing financial crisis with the teaching staff having to quit their jobs since they have not been paid their salary dues for a long period of time.

The financial crisis the universities are experiencing have been attributed to the inability of the government to remit the funding subsidy. This has largely been attributed to large numbers of students qualifying for direct university placement.

The review process was last done three years ago and therefore need to go through the process again.

Universities vice-chancellors, academic registrars and representatives of the professional bodies are expected to meet soon to  discuss and review the entry requirements to the various courses.

More proposals are yet to be discussed in similar stakeholders meeting for middle-level colleges that will be held in weeks to come. Here the criteria for diploma and certificate courses will be reviewed.
