Ministry of Education To Offer P1 Teachers CBC diploma Courses through school-based programmes

The ministry of education is planning to equip 175,000 P1 Teachers with diploma degrees in competency-based curriculum, CBC. The ministry, which has already implemented the competency-based curriculum in lower grades, revealed that it is working on school-based programmes for teachers with P1 certificate to upgrade to diploma programs with competency-based pedagogies.

If the plans are implemented, P1 teachers will be equipped with the necessary skills required to handle CBC classes. Even though CBC workshops have been there for quite sometimes, they have not been effective since they struggle to handle so much, within a very short time.

The CBC Diploma programmes will be offered in contracted public universities and will last three years. By the end of the three years, the teaches will have the necessary CBC pedagogies per subject, classroom management skills and CBC assessment skills. The teachers will also be taken though CBC instructional strategies, identification of learner competencies, CBC classroom activities, among other units.

Fee payment for the programme has not been revealed but there are high chances that the government might sponsor the teachers to pursue the diploma programme.

The government is currently phasing out out P1 and replacing it with diploma in primary teacher education. Consequently, the government is working on a plan to ensure that only diploma holders teach in primary schools. It is for this reason that the ministry has offered to give P1 teachers a diploma course in CBC.

The diploma course is expected to begin in June, once third term ends. The diploma in teacher education course, which has so far received a lower quorum, was expected to begin in May.
