Over 500 Heads Retained by TSC To Retire in December
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has finally defended its move to extend, on contractual terms, the services of over 500 heads of institutions who were set to retire in July 1,2021. The contracts were extended for a year ending December 31, 2022.
Responding to questions raised by nominated Member of Parliament (MP) and former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Hon. Wilson Sossion regarding post retirement engagement of certain Head teachers by the TSC, the Commission’s CEO Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia stated that it was impossible for the commission to conduct interviews and manage the transition of the heads of institutions in the middle of the pandemic considering the tight Covid-19 prevention protocols that had been put in place.
Several County Directors and other field officers have hinted that the extension option affected head teachers of primary schools as well as principals of secondary schools and teachers’ colleges.

Dr. Macharia maintains that the TSC is not bound by the provisions of the Public Service Commission Act and being an independent Commission, the terms and conditions of service for TSC employees are guided by the Constitution, the TSC Act,the Employment Act and the Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT).
Macharia stated that no funding will be required for their post retirement remuneration since the teachers have not been replaced; and that they will be paid pension up-to the date of compulsory retirement and service gratuity for the contract period.
