Salaries of public health officers depend on their cadres. Some of the cadres in the public health profession are:

Public Health Assistant

Responsibilities of a public health assistant include;

  • Provision of Environmental/ public Health Extension services
  • Mobilization and sensitization of communities and giving them advice on matters pertaining environmental health
  • Referral of health cases to corresponding health care facilities
  • Performing immunization
  • They identify environmental health matters at household stages
  • Arranging dates for community health events to empower communities on emerging public health issues
  • Keeping records of services performed
  • Analyzing health demands of the community
  • Advising communities on safety measures relating to food and water

Qualifications

  • Must have Certificate in Environmental Health Science or Public Health from an accredited college.
  • Must be computer literate

Senior Public Health Assistant or Assistant Public Health Officer 1

 This is the highest-ranking Public Health Assistant. The senior public health assistant has the following responsibilities.

  • Provision of Environmental/ public Health Extension services
  • Mobilization and sensitization of communities and giving them advice on matters pertaining environmental health
  • Performing immunization, tracking TB within communities and vaccinating.
  • Referral of health cases to corresponding health care facilities
  • They identify environmental health matters at household stages
  • Arranging dates for community health events to empower communities on emerging public health issues
  • Keeping records of services performed
  • Analyzing health demands of the community
  • Advising communities on safety measures relating to food and water
  • Regular inspection of homes, market centres, commercial buildings, trading places, to make sure that cleanliness and sanitary rules are followed.
  • Issuance of statutory notices
  • Inspection of water sources within the community to ensure proper maintenance for drinking purposes.

Qualifications

  • Must have served as a Public Health Assistant I or Assistant Public Health Officer II for not less than three years
  • Must have a diploma in either Environmental Health Science /Public Health from an accredited institution
  • Must be Computer literate

Senior Assistant Public Health Officer or Senior Public Health Officer

Responsibilities of a Senior Public Health Officer include;

  • Provision of Environmental/ public Health Extension services
  • They identify environmental health matters at community stages
  • Keeping records of services performed
  • Implementing control measures for rodents, vermin and vectors in the communities within their stations.
  • Issuance of statutory notices
  • Inspection of water sources within the community to ensure proper maintenance for drinking purposes.
  • inspection of health care facilities
  • they oversee the construction of sanitary rooms in schools, market centres and commercial buildings;
  • collection of water and food samples for chemical analysis
  • Performing immunization
  • Initiation and implementation of Community Based Health Care Programs
  • Implementation of integrated mosquito control techniques
  • Assessing proper solid waste collection and disposal

Qualifications

  • Must have Served as an Assistant Public Health Officer 1 for not less than three years
  • Must have a Diploma in either environmental health science or Public health from a chartered Institution
  • Must be computer literate.
