Former Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion has alleged that Former Education CS for Fred Matiang’i was glorified for the wrong reasons during his tenure.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Sossion said Matiang’i developed a culture of destruction in the education sector through his policies.

“Matiang’i was glorified while he developed a culture of the destruction of our students through his policies,” he said.

He also claimed Matiang’i policies were geared towards constricting the transition of students to the university.

“The policy was meant to deliberately constrict the transition of student to varsity. When we have a reduction of numbers of As from 3,000 to 1,146, really? What is the purpose of exams? We are destroying our students with the grading system,” he said.

Sossion further said the government must have an in-depth discussion about the purpose of national exams.

“We must discuss and debate the purpose of National exams, we need to know that exams are there to facilitate the transition,” he added.

Sossion said the transition of students into university is still low, adding that it should be similar to what happens for primary pupils when transiting to secondary schools.

He also lauded the examination system in the country, saying it is of higher quality.

“If we do a comparative analysis, Grade C in Kenya is automatically Grade A in Botswana, we are running a very high examination system.”

Govt. blames rights activists for school fires as Magoha Advocates For Reintroduction of Caning in schools https://elimupedia.com/govt-blames-rights-activists-for-school-fires-as-magoha-advocates-for-reintroduction-of-caning-in-schools.html Tue, 07 Dec 2021 03:39:16 +0000 https://elimupedia.com/?p=4871 Govt. blames rights activists for school fires as Magoha Advocates For Reintroduction of Caning in schools

The Government has shifted blames on the human rights activists for the unruly behaviour currently witnessed among students in various schools.

According to the Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, human rights activists have made it difficult for the Government to have sanity in the education sector.

However, he added that the Government is keen on ensuring there was law and order in the management of the education sector in the country.

“The Government is concerned about the frequent cases of unrest in schools and we are going to put measures in place to ensure we have law and order in place,” said Matiang’i.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha who was in the company of Matiang’i at Egentonto Primary School in South Mugirango Constituency in Kisii County, advocated for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in schools to bring back sanity.

Magoha said that during his time in school, they were caned thoroughly which made him what he is today and that nobody died from the strokes of canes they got from teachers in a bid to instil discipline in the students.

“I am adamant that caning should be reintroduced back in schools immediately because we cannot afford to have rogue students running amok in schools unchecked,” said Magoha.

He said that the 2021 national examinations to be conducted in March next year were ready and that the government will ensure that the exercise was carried out without any anomalies.

“The Government is aware that students have faced a lot of challenges for the last one year since due to Covid-19 and we are going to ensure that all the challenges the students faced during that difficult time are considered,” said Magoha.

Construction of new classrooms To Be Supervised By Chiefs https://elimupedia.com/construction-of-new-classrooms-to-be-supervised-by-chiefs.html Thu, 28 Oct 2021 03:22:09 +0000 https://elimupedia.com/?p=4624 Construction of new classrooms To Be Supervised By Chiefs

The new classes, according to Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha and his Interior counterpart, Fred Matiang’i, will accommodate learners transiting from primary to junior secondary schools.

Dr Matiang’i tasked officers to start preparing for the projects as the classrooms should be ready to accommodate learners by 2023.

“Start pushing teams in the sub-county to start preparations. This is not the time to start saying you are waiting for circulars. Rally the troops to start preparations early, because if we do not do that we shall fail,” said Matiang’i.

He, at the same time, directed Regional Commissioners to take action against chiefs who fail to do what is expected of them.

What this means is that every chief must spend their time on projects supporting the contractors and coordinating them to ensure the projects move on smoothly.

Matiang’i also cautioned contractors against inflating the cost of projects. “It’s not that we have a huge capital outlay to achieve this project. We are operating on a small budget. Cost-effectiveness is very important,” he said. Each of the classes will cost about Sh800,000 and the overall target is 20,000 of them.

These new classrooms will since the CBC task-force report estimated that the government needs to create 37,000 new ones nationally to cater for the anticipated double intake of form ones.

The Cabinet Secretaries were addressing a multi-agency team comprising Regional Commissioners, County Commissioners, Regional Director of Education, and County Director of Education from the 47 counties yesterday at Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, Nairobi.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the National Treasury to release Sh8.1 billion for the project. “We have delivered before, so we are not reinventing the wheel. The government will do whatever it takes to ensure the officers deliver the projects by April,” said Prof Magoha.

He instructed Education officers to identify contractors that are competent and have adequate manpower to do the work in a professional way.

The CS said contractors would be paid via mobile money to avoid giving the officers the burden of handling cash.

“Please make sure the contractors give the right personal information to avoid issues of delay in payment. During the desks project, we had a lot of delays. When you meet the contractors, ensure they are well briefed in such aspects so that we don’t have problems in wiring the money because this may delay this project,” he said.
