The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has set the date for national elections. The union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) members allied to Secretary-General Wilson Sossion and acting National Chairman Collins Oyuu said that the polls will be held on June 26, 2021 at the Ruaraka Sports Club in Nairobi.

The 44 NEC members resolved that the exercise, where 1,878 delegates are expected to take part, will be an in person poll as opposed to a virtual exercise.

In a meeting held at the union’s headquarters in Nairobi’s Mfangano Street, NEC and National Steering Council (NSG) – the union’s top decision making organs – resolved that nomination papers will be submitted on June 25 to officers from the Ministry of Labour at Ruaraka Sports Club.

Knut’s 110 branches have been mandated to prepare and validate a list of delegates for the Special Delegates Conference (SDC) and forward it to the union headquarters by close of business on June 18.

Four top branch officials – Executive secretary, treasurer, chairperson and woman representative – will get automatic tickets to the Special Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) while branch executive committee members will get the other slots. Should there be additional slots, ordinary members will be incorporated as delegates.

“The nomination of delegates to the Annual Delegates Conference shall be carried out by the branch executive council. Top officers of the branch shall automatically be delegates depending on the number of delegates allocated to each branch,” Secretary-General Wilson Sossion in a statement.

The notice to the branches – has been copied to Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui, Principal Secretary in the Ministry Peter Tum, acting Labour Commissioner Hellen Apiyo, and the Registrar of Trade Unions Mrs E.N Gicheha.

The Saturday NEC meeting, the first to be held since 2018 despite the constitutional provision that it be held thrice a year or in such a time that the secretary general and the national chairman deems fit.

Acting national chairman Collins Oyuu is expected to face off with Mr Sossion in the polls after Kericho branch executive secretary Stanley Mutai dropped out and settled for the first national vice chairman position.

Three times in a row, NEC members allied to Mr Oyuu had settled on the date in meetings skipped by Mr Sossion.  Delegates will elect new office bearers with 11 positions at the national steering level and 44 NEC positions up for grabs.

The union is faced with a financial crunch following its spat with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that has seen its membership numbers and dues dwindle to Sh35 million a month from Sh147 million two years ago.

Mr Sossion is on record stating that the union requires Sh100 million to fund the election. As a result, it is looking up to international trade unions and organisations to fund the national election.

Due to sharp reduction in membership dues, branch officials and employees have gone without salaries for over a year while some offices have been closed over rent areas as others face auction from landlords.

The NEC meeting comes as 18 branch executive committee members in Bomet rallied behind Mr Sossion to retain his position.

Secrets of Oyuu, Mutai strategy To Oust Sossion https://elimupedia.com/secrets-of-oyuu-mutai-strategy-to-oust-sossion.html Thu, 06 May 2021 08:57:14 +0000 https://elimupedia.com/?p=3071 Secrets of Oyuu, Mutai strategy To Oust Sossion

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) acting National Chairman Collins Oyuu and Kericho branch Executive Secretary Stanley Mutai are planning on a possible winning formula to oust current Secretary General, Wilson Sossion.

The two who have boldly come out to accuse Sossion of the woes the union is facing have revealed that they are in talks of coming up with any formula that will work and which will send Sossion home.

“I and Oyuu and quite a number of us are together, we want to bring the union back to its former glory and that is our main goal,” said Mutai.

Oyuu on the other side revealed that he was in talks with Mutai and he doesn’t see any problem in them working together in an effort to revamp the union.“We talk every day and there is no problem. A strong team is coming which is a tsunami and there should be no worry about that, whoever who is worried should consult me and get it from the horse’s mouth. This union should be back,” said Oyuu.

However, what should scratch the heads of the two is who among them should exactly go for which seat, a possible winning team and in particular bagging nearly all the votes of the vote-rich Rift Valley Region and other regions of Nyanza, Eastern and Western of which one cannot rule out Sossion in getting overwhelming votes.“We can sacrifice our ambitions so long us we bring back this union. We leave a legacy for the young generation and that is our main objective,” said Mutai.

The two who now seem to direct all their efforts to ensuring Sossion is removed from the leadership of the union, are keen to ensure that they establish a strong team in achieving their objective despite the differences between Oyuu and Sossion on the date of election.

“There is a formula that is being brewed somewhere by the elders of the union and there are some people working on that very soon, we shall announce in a ceremony and we shall launch it as a team that extend from Busia to Lamu and all the corners of this republic,” revealed Mutai.

Fresh Tug Of War Between Oyuu And Sossion-Could Oyuu Be In The Race?

A KNUT executive Swears To Contest and Beat Sossion in May Elections

Sources close to the union leadership revealed that Oyuu’s camp is fronting for reverting to the union’s tradition where power was being distributed among regions, with some adding that Mutai could possibly change the game due to overwhelming support he enjoys from Rift Valley region and from majority of the branch Executive Secretaries.

According to the union’s former tradition, the seat of National Chairman used to be allocated Rift Valley, Western and Central regions, while that of the Secretary General was left to Nairobi, Nyanza and Coast.

Could this be the formula, then Mutai will be left to go for the seat of National Chairman hence battling it out with Aggrey Namisi, the Bungoma North Executive Secretary, who has also declared interest in the seat while Oyuu being the only horse to face Sossion in the ballot.

Speaking to Education News, Namisi said that he was going for a seat that was vacant and which traditionally is for the Western region and he is currently working round the clock to ensure that he has full support from the region before making any further declarations.

Some argue that could the two reach to that formula of Mutai running for the National Chairman seat then it will be hard to topple Sossion since he (Sossion) will easily convince the Rift Valley block that they vote for Mutai for National Chairman and him [Sossion] for Secretary General seat.

Considering further that Mutai is only left with almost two years to retirement, then Sossion could possibly pick a candidate from either Western or Central for either of the seats of first or second vice-chair in this election whom he will possibly support to succeed Mutai for National Chair position when he retires.

Another alternative for the Oyuu-Mutai camp is possibly persuading Oyuu to go for the National Chairman while Mutai for the Secretary General seat thereafter, when he[Mutai] will go for retirement they will switch positions; and further put into account Western or Central for either of the seats of first and second vice-chair positions who will succeed Oyuu after switching.

Sources also hinted that this will work considering that majority of branches (19 branches) in Rift Valley fully support Mutai and which he will get almost 80 per cent of the votes.

In Central region, Oyuu has moved swiftly to ensure that he consolidated the regions votes through supporting Patrick Karinga’s candidature for the position of the first National Vice-chairman. Karinga, the Nyeri branch chairman, was a key opponent of Oyuu during the elections of the first National Vice chairman in December 2018 and his candidature by that time was supported by John Matiang’i.

In Nairobi, hopes have been placed to current Deputy Secretary General Hesbon Otieno who will be defending the seat and battling it off with Nairobi branch Executive Secretary Macharia Mugwe. A total of 2, 045 delegates are expected to decide the fate of the union in this year’s election with Rift valley having 600 delegates, Western 278 delegates, Nyanza 320 delegates, Central 220 delegates, Coast 140 delegates, Nairobi 44 delegates and North Eastern 23 delegates.

KNUT Ready for Dialogue with TSC https://elimupedia.com/knut-ready-for-dialogue-with-tsc.html Tue, 16 Feb 2021 02:34:46 +0000 http://elimupedia.com/?p=2469 KNUT Ready for Dialogue with TSC

Kenya national union of teachers, KNUT, has hinted a possible interest in dialogue with the teachers’ service commission, TSC. KNUT deputy secretary Hesbone  Otieno, said that they are ready for a dialogue with TSC, concerning the salary increment of teachers.

Otieno asked TSC to discuss with the union, instead of intimidating teachers, arguing that implementation of the 2017-2021 CBA is long overdue.

He was addressing transmara teachers in kilgoris, where he also hinted of a looming teachers strike in case TSC will not agree a table talk with the union.

He said, “TSC should not expect good results, more so during the current curriculum transition period, should it continue treating teachers like slaves.”

“Security is a collective responsibility and the CS should reverse his stand on the matter because failure to do that will cause disharmony among various education stake holders,” Otieno claimed.

Otieno and his boss wilson sossion, are speaking one language concering the talks and the strike

Last week, KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion issued a  two weeks’ strike notice against TSC should 2021-2015 CBA not be negotiated within two weeks.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said the current salary rates were negotiated to cover 2017-2021 that ends in June.

“We hereby issue a 14-day notice from the date of this letter and failure of action from your part shall lead to full-blown industrial action.” Reads Sossion’s letter to TSC.

Sossion states in his dated 10TH February letter, that despite many pleas by the union to start negotiations on the 2021-2025 new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), TSC has not responded.

Knut Homabay branch is holding its election on Saturday 16th January 2021.Of so much concern is that the elections will be a walk in the park for the incumbent officials as no other members have signed up to contest.

KNUT members from the branches will vote for the positions of chairperson, deputy chairperson, treasurer, deputy treasurer, executive secretary, assistant executive secretary and branch woman representative.

Competition is very limited probably because several members have withdrawn from the union, a move that has fueled the wrangles between KNUT and the Teachers Service Commission.

Currently, Knut Homa Bay branch members are below 50, down from more than 2,000 members, yet some members are still planning of exiting the once giant union.

Sources within Knut have revealed that most of the current members are unwilling to contest since the officials are more likely to go home with empty pockets at the end of every month as the union no longer receives the same amount of money it did in the past in deductions from salaries.

“Some officials were transferred to other schools during the delocalisation exercise while others have retired. No one has shown interest in their seats, which we believe will not be filled,” the source said.

However, Knut’s Homa Bay Executive Secretary Cornel Ojuok, has expressed confidence that the election will attract a number of teachers seeking various positions. So far, none has expressed interests. To be an official in the union, one must have paid the monthly subscription fee up to December 2020.

“We have informed the labour office about the exercise. Labour officials will ensure the exercise is free and fair,” he said.

Ironically, KNUT Homabay branch will use its June 2019 register, which has more than 2,000 members, on the voting day, despite having low numbers currently. Some Knut members moved to Kuppet making KUPPET stronger.

Stop Denying Teachers Freedom Of Worship: KNUT Warns TSC https://elimupedia.com/stop-denying-teachers-freedom-of-worship-knut-warns-tsc.html Mon, 11 Jan 2021 03:53:42 +0000 http://elimupedia.com/?p=2258 Stop Denying Teachers Freedom Of Worship: KNUT Warns TSC

Kenya National Union of Teachers, (KNUT) National treasurer John Matiang’i has hit on the teachers’ service Commission for denying teachers their freedom of worship. He called upon the clergy and MPs to speak out against the move since it is very unconstitutional.

“Church leaders and politicians should not be mute leaving their members at the mercy of employees busy in defying the Constitution. Teachers are denied an opportunity to worship on their preferred days because they must attend trainings on weekends. Like now, we have been forced to do elections on Saturday and Sunday when we are supposed to be in church. We cannot accept to work on weekends” he noted,” Matiang’i said.

According to Matiang’i, TSC knows the gazetted official working hours and should therefore stop interfering with the social activities of teachers.

“The official working hours have been gazetted by the Ministry of Education. It is wrong to subject teachers to training when they are supposed to carry out their social activities.”

Matiang’i, who spoke at Gusii Stadium on Sunday when he presided over branch elections, also noted, that the Teachers Service Commission’s move to ban teachers from attending trainings, elections and other activities on weekdays is illegal.

The VC was referring to a TSC circular directing agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations undertaking educational tasks that require teacher participation to schedule them to weekends and school holidays.

He also accused TSC of threatening teachers not to participate in politics, saying teachers too have a right to elect leaders.

“It is our right as citizens to elect political leaders. The intimidation has to come to an end. There is religious liberty all over the World. TSC has now become a rogue commission that is implementing illegal policies and intimidating teachers. We are warning the commission that teachers will reject any form of intimidation,” he said.

With too much concern, Matiang’i noted that the actions by TSC were affecting the morale of teachers.

“Teachers are low in morale and feel threatened. Warning letters are becoming the norm of the day. You can take a cow to the river but you can’t force it into drinking water,” he said.

Further Matiang’i warned that TSC was out to kill KNUT completely.

“We had more than 100,000 members but the numbers have gone down due to intimidation by our employer. KNUT will not die and I want to ask President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene,” he noted

Will Sossion’s Presence Rescue KNUT From Sinking? https://elimupedia.com/will-sossions-presence-rescue-knut-from-sinking.html Tue, 05 Jan 2021 04:30:31 +0000 http://elimupedia.com/?p=2181 Will Sossion’s Presence Rescue KNUT From Sinking?

A section of Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) members who have defected from the once giant union are now claiming that the end days of Wilson Sossion as secretary general of KNUT are as marred with controversy as when he started. They are confident that Sossion won’t retain his seat, though the latter has expressed confidence that he has seen no competent competitor.

Sossion became Knut boss by abrasively trashing a long tradition of rotation of leadership positions that would have seen acting secretary general, Mudzo Nzili, from the Coast, endorsed to the post in that year’s annual delegates conference.

Currently, KNUT sinking deeper and deeper. From its 187,000 members, more than 170,000 have left. Its rival, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) members are up to 120,000, and it is still experiencing growth.

Union Dues have dropped to below ksh. 20 million from Sh140 million monthly. This has resulted to unpaid rents and salaries for uncountable months.

What appears as a shock to the defectors is that the decline of Knut has aligned perfectly with the tenure of Sossion as secretary general. All they are questioning themselves is what went wrong.

“Sossion made Knut the union of strikes. Nothing was too small to strike over, creating perpetual turmoil in education. Indeed his strikes were timed to cause maximum disruption. Finally, everybody, teachers, students, parents, the Government, and the country in general, were all completely fed up,” one of the defectors accounts.

Others recall how Sossion arrayed himself against all Government initiatives, and became Mr. No. He railed against the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), even sending teachers to disrupt induction training sessions for their colleagues.

He has also been accused of opposing the appointment of Prof. George Magoha as Education Cabinet Secretary, and vowed not to work with him.

He also opposed the delocalization policy where head teachers who had stayed for over nine years at one work station were being transferred.

Accepting ODM nomination to Parliament was his biggest downfall. He saw nothing wrong in engaging in partisan politics while running a union whose members are from across the political divide, nor did earning two salaries from public jobs.He seem to walk on water. When the TSC deregistered him because of this, he blissfully brushed it aside.

Unfortunately for Knut, Sossion alienated all allies and partners, from Kuppet, to TSC, union members, Government officials, and parents, and turned public opinion against a union once seen as a bulwark against Government trampling on rights of workers.

In an effort to save Knut, the National Executive Committee (NEC) met in August 2019 for a meeting Sossion had called and later cancelled, and threw him out.

The courts reinstated him. He is now in office courtesy of a court order. His penchant for prosecuting every other issue in court is a well sung refrain.

He also cancelled the 2019 annual delegates’ conference, claiming that the leadership was trying to resolve wrangles within it.

Currently, ex members claim that Sossion is running Knut against very strong winds that will inevitably overwhelm it soon.

Knut went to court and stopped TSC from using the career progression guidelines that were in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), in favour of the old schemes of service.

TSC obliged, and created two payrolls, one for Knut members to be paid according to the old schemes, and the other for non-Knut members, to be paid according to the CBA.

The non-Knut members have already received two pay rises since last year in line with the CBA. There are also promotion vacancies ongoing strictly for teachers who are in line with the career progression guidelines.

Shockingly, KNUT has opposed the vacancies. It has also said that it will recover any money inadvertently paid to its members in line with the new guidelines.

Sources have it that TSC is smarter than Sossion and that Sossion is left with no other card to play since he has exploited all his cards. Should Sossion continue serving as KNUT SG, or should he sacrifice the potential he has for another leader?

Deposit Union Dues Directly to KNUT Bank accounts: KNUT Reminds Members https://elimupedia.com/deposit-union-dues-directly-to-knut-bank-accounts-knut-reminds-members.html Tue, 29 Dec 2020 04:40:54 +0000 http://elimupedia.com/?p=2067 Deposit Union Dues Directly to KNUT Bank accounts: KNUT Reminds Members

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), secretary general Wilson Sossion, has pled with members who were removed from the KNUT register by TSC to deposit their union dues directly to KNUT bank accounts and forward the receipts to KNUT offices.

“We encourage those who have been removed from our register illegally to pay their subscription fees directly to Knut bank accounts and forward the slips to us,” Mr. Sossion said last month.

In less than two years, KNUT has lost more than Ksh. 1 billion after the TSC stopped remitting membership contributions.

The KNUT membership has fallen from 187,471 to below 20,000 in a year, with monthly contributions dropping from ksh. 144 million to less than ksh. 20 million.

Recently, Mr. Sossion admitted that Knut was on its knees financially and could not pay its employees, rent or meet operational costs.

KNUT accuses TSC of taking advantage of the check-off system to deny her union dues and to illegally expunge members from its register.

Sossion has insisted that KNUT is in a position to fund branch and national elections, despite the financial woes that the union is currently facing. KNUT elections are set to begin on 8th January, 2021.

Initially, KNUT elections had been set for 4th January 2021, a date which coincided with the reopening of schools, thus had to be moved.

Mr. Sossion is confident that Knut members would brave the financial hitches and elect their office bearers.

“With the support of partners, Knut will conduct the elections as planned. There should be no fear. It is all systems go,” he said.

Sossion had earlier on hinted that KNUT was not in a position to fund its branch elections after TSC denied it union dues and agency fees.

Seven Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT, officials have pledged their loyal support for the Secretary- General Wilson Sossion and distanced themselves from a plot to have him barred from seeking re-election.

Among the seven, are the KNUT acting chairman, Collins Oyuu and branch secretaries for Baringo, Mwingi, Mombasa, Kakamega East and Kajiado branches. They have seriously taken issue with a claim that 10 officials who signed a letter to the President and the Labour Cabinet secretary, were representing 90 branch secretaries.

“In every working environment, there can never miss disharmony. What I know is that only 10 met. That they represented over 90 branch executive secretaries is not known to me,” said Mr. Oyuu.

“Anyone opposed to Mr. Sossion should wait for elections scheduled for next year,” said Cheptarus..

Mwingi branch secretary Michael Munyasia , expressed his confidence in the leadership of Mr. Sossion.

The letter was also disowned by Kericho branch woman representative,  Ann Cheruiyot, who is also a member of the national executive council.

“We were not involved in the writing of the letter and therefore it cannot be the voice of branch secretaries or Knut teachers,” Ms Cheruiyot said.

Mombasa executive secretary, Dan Aloo, said his branch had not been consulted about the move against Mr. Sossion. He assured Sossion that Mombasa branch fully supports him.

Kakamega East branch executive secretary, Patrick Chungani, revealed that the people claiming to oppose Sossion were being used to fight him.

“There is nothing that Sossion has done to teachers to warrant his removal. Come next year, the teachers of this country will re-elect him as our secretary general,” said Mr. Chungani, who doubles up as the  KNUT western region chairman.

Kajiado branch secretary,  Elly Korinko, said the group of 10 executive secretaries is just determined  to cause disharmony in the union.

“We’re ready for elections and no one sent any group to go represent us. We’re able to speak on our behalf,” Mr. Korinko said.NEXT

KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion has expressed his confidence of winning next year’s national KNUT polls.

Mr. Sossion, who is currently facing stiff opposition from his national executive members, seems unmoved and undisturbed despite the strong and stage managed opposition. Unionists opposed to Sossion have blamed his leadership style on the falling fortunes of Knut.

For the first time since it’s registration as trade union, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) is boasting of a larger membership than her sister KNUT even as the two giant teachers’ unions go to the polls next year. The membership of the once giant union has dropped to 32,000 in just two years. Teachers say Sossion’s combative style has upset TSC bosses and the Ministry of Education.

After an exodus of members orchestrated by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) goes to elections a weakened body. This move should actually undermine Secretary-General Wilson Sossion’s quest for a third term, but he has insisted he must be in the ballot and that his competitors should brace themselves for a tough race.

Campaigns for the elections by the unions that have had contrasting fortunes in the past two years, have already begun at branch and national levels ahead of the January vote.

For a person to win a Knut national seat, he or she is required to have won top seats at branch level. Hopefuls for top union positions will declare their interest after winning at branch level.

The unions elect their national leaders for a five-year term. With no term limits, they can be re-elected as many times as possible. National elections will be held from April to June.

The registrar of trade unions issued a notice to KUPPET, KNUT and other unions in September to call elections early next 2021, in line with their constitutions.

Each county has 10 elective seats and three nomination slots. Though confident of a win, Mr. Sossion should be prepared to face stiff competition from people who want new faces in Knut.

Currently, Knut is in a financial crisis that has impacted the shutting of some of its 110 branches countrywide. Branch secretaries and other officials have gone without pay for several months and  Some office property has been auctioned.

Mr. Sossion had earlier hinted that KNUT does not have money for the elections but later shifted goal posts by confirming that elections will be held and announced the dates for branch elections. Mr. Sossion announced that KNUT polls would be held from January 4 to March 31, 2021.
