The Ministry of education has revealed its plans of advertising the upgrade Diploma programs for year 2021, following a meeting held on 15th July 2021 at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). In the meeting, which was attended by representatives from the ministry, TSC and KICD, it was agreed that the unemployed and in-service ECDE and P1 teachers upgrade to diploma courses. For unemployed teachers in the two categories, it will be a prerequisite for employment.

The upgrade Diploma program will target trained ECDE and P1 teachers who are not in service and wish to Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) and Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) respectively

All teachers currently employed by the Teacher Service Commission (TSC), County Governments and Private Schools will be expected to start the blended upgrade program when the school calendar normalizes having been disrupted by COVID 19 Pandemic.

In a circular sent to regional and county directors of education,  the principal secretary basic education, Julius O. Jwan, has requested regional and county bosses of education  to communicate the plans  to all Headteachers in their jurisdiction who should subsequently inform their staff.

“The purpose of this letter is to request you to communicate to all Headteachers in your jurisdiction who should subsequently inform their staff,” stated part of the letter.

“KICD (Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development) is working on the School Based Curriculum. We’re not putting entry requirements the same way for direct entry. The entry requirements for teachers who are already practicing will just be the P1 Certificate,” said Abdi, the teacher education director in the ministry of education during a meeting.

According to Basic Education Statistical Booklet 2019 released last year by the Ministry of Education,there are 219,732 teachers in public primary schools of whom 175,712 teachers are P1 Certificate holders.
