TSC Promotes Over 7,200 P1 teachers to junior secondary
More than 7,000 primary school teachers will now be deployed to teach at the junior secondary school level.
Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia said the teachers have the requisite qualifications to teach Grade 7 learners.
“The mapping process is continuous and verification is still ongoing to identify more teachers to be posted,” Macharia said.
Macharia was speaking when the commission appeared before the National Assembly departmental committee on education and research on Tuesday.
The commission has distributed the teachers to different counties based on the number of classes.
The teachers who qualified had to meet a number of requirements to be considered.
“Bachelors in Education, a C plus in KCSE, at least C plus in two teaching subjects in KCSE and at least 8 units in each of the two teaching subjects,” she said.
She clarified that since 2019 the commission has been promoting primary school teachers to teach in secondary schools.

Further, another 30,550 teachers were deployed to every Grade 7 class to teach.
“Each teacher has two subjects and we realised that most of the Grade 7 subjects have a sort of correlation,” she said.
This means, one teacher can teach more than one subject at the JSS level.
In a statement in December, the commission said 10,000 of the teachers will be employed on permanent pensionable terms while 25,550 will be intern teachers.
It said 9,000 of the slots are for permanent secondary school teachers and 1,000 for primary school teachers while 21,550 slots are for intern teachers for Junior Secondary Schools.
The Commission said another 4,000 intern teachers will be hired for primary schools.
