Heated debate, bad memories and bitter exchanges were witnessed early today on social media in Upper western due to a post by allegedly Dr. Wanjala Iyaya campaigner portraying Bukusu ethnic community as dangerous and bad in leadership. Dr. Iyaya is contesting to become MP on UDA ticket against Ford Kenya’s Hon. Martin Wanyonyi Pepela, ODM’s Mr. Aggrey Namisi and Jubilee’s Ms. Caroline Buyela.
The unfortunate tribal post on Dr. Iyaya’s Facebook group was posted by one Kibeu Augustine earlier in the morning. Most people and leaders have come out strongly to condemn the sentiments terming retrogressive, criminal and outdated. They all call upon residents to avoid tribal sentiments to enhance cohesion. Dr. Iyaya is yet to respond to the same and condemn despite the perpetrator posting such on his wall. That raises questions than answers.
John Murumba a businessman at Lugulu Market condemned the sentiments and disassociated himself from them. “We Tachonis are peaceful people and we respect everyone in Webuye east because everyone has a right to stay anywhere in this country and contest for any elective seat”, he said. “The utterances were abusive, low key and Precambrian”, he added. He expressed concerns on the way leaders can allow such people act that way under their watch. He called upon Dr. Iyaya to come out and condemn but he was worried it has taken long thus being viewed as the author or accomplice.
There’s a concern about Dr. Iyaya’s campaign team picked from close relatives in just one clan. Residents we interviewed stated that it will be difficult if he wins now that his campaign team comprises of just one family. “The characters of all those spearheading his campaign is wanting and questionable. If he manages to win, we might not access him to offer service delivery”, his neighbor stated but sort anonymity.Dr. Iyaya’s Campaign secretariat comprises of the following;
Mr. Humphrey Wabomba Mbayi—Chairman
Mr. Isaac Namusasi ——Finance Manager
Mr. Kingsley Mutali……….Logistics manager.
Ms. Rose Buyuni——Secretary
Ms. Risper Metrine Nangalama……Member
Mr. Masayi Mutoro…..Member.
They all originate from one clan and close relatives to DAP Kenya candidate in Webuye East. Mr. Mbayi is a retired administrator after working as Chief in Nairobi for decades. Mr. Kingsley Mutali contested in the last elections and lost in primaries. Ms. Metrine Nangalama who surprised many by supporting Dr. Iyaya instead of Hon. Martin Pepela by virtue of being in the same party Ford Kenya is likely to miss out in nomination come August. Efforts to reach them to substantiate was unsuccessful.
