Kenya Secondary School principals have asked the government to fully avail the capitation fund to learning institutions as the Ministry of Education plans to roll out the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in secondary schools.

Kenya Secondary Schools Head Association (KSSHA) chairman Indimuli Kahi further emphasized the need to ensure that teachers are equipped with the requisite training to teach in junior secondary school.

Kahi acknowledged that at the moment, many public schools are grappling with infrastructural, funding and staffing challenges and therefore the government should ensure a smooth transition by putting all measures in place.

“We want to know what the government has planned ahead of the transition because we know there are teething problems like teacher preparedness,” said Kahi.

Teachers across the country have sharply criticized Knut Secretary general Collins Oyuu’s speech during the 45th KESSHA Delegates conference at Sheikh Zeyed in Mombasa County on 18th April 2022.

One part of the speech that attracted reactions from most teachers was the fuel remarks. During the speech, Mr. Oyuu called on the Head of state, His excellency Uhuru Kenyatta to move with speed and decisively and firmly deal with individuals who are deliberately causing suffering to Kenyans by hoarding fuel products saying it had led to sky-rocketed prices to food commodities.

This did not go well with a section of teachers who felt that teachers have so many problems that Oyuu would have talked about in his speech rather than touching on the fuel issue which is too obvious.

“Why must Oyuu talk about the fuel issue which is a common problem and in a different ministry? As teachers, we have enough problems and we expect Oyuu to seek solutions to the problems in such forums. We need to feel him fighting for us during heads’ meeting,” quipped a teacher who sought anonymity.

The SG also reminded delegates and teachers country-wide that 2022 has three sets of examinations i.e KCSE and KCPE of 2021 and 2022 and the first final primary school class of CBC to be administered and that these would need that they keep the spirit high in ensuring that all is well throughout all the sessions.

He called upon the KNEC to improve on the packages/remunerations given to center managers, invigilators, supervisors and markers in the entire exercise citing that inflation has taken tall on teachers.

As an appreciation, He thanked head-teachers and principals for the good work they are doing in their respective schools. He thanked them for good management of the just concluded KSCE examinations and the marking that was concluded today from various centers nationally.

Finally, Oyuu expressed confidence that teachers across the country will make the right decision in electing the 5th president of the republic at the end of Hon Uhuru’s term of leadership on 9th August 2022 and called on leaders of teachers to give the right direction that would benefit teachers of Kenya and all other workers.
