Secondary and primary school teachers from Kilifi Municipality have petitioned Parliament to intervene and have their house allowances increased.

In a petition presented on their behalf by Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, the teachers claimed they are not paid commensurate allowance as those residing in major towns and hence seek accommodation in the outskirts of the area.

A gazette notice dated March 19, 2019, conferred Kilifi Town the status of the municipality and led to the enhancement of house allowance for civil servants.

Teachers under permanent and pensionable terms are paid house allowance based on the job group, working conditions and status of town and geographical area.

“Teachers working and residing in Kilifi Municipality feel discriminated and their right and fundamental freedom infringed,” the petition stated.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission issued an enhanced house allowance classification of teachers’ workstations within municipalities, whereby those residing in major towns receive higher pay for house allowance to cushion them from the high cost of housing.

In the petition, the teachers asked MPs to inquire into the living conditions of teachers working and residing within Kilifi Municipality.

They further asked lawmakers to recommend that teachers in both secondary and primary schools within Kilifi Municipality are facilitated to receive enhanced house allowance.
