Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has cautioned candidates sitting for their KCSE examinations to be cautious of fake exam papers being circulated on various social media platforms.
KNEC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr David Njengere has confirmed that the examination papers being circulated on social media platforms are not genuine and are only meant to deceive those sitting for KCSE.
He said the new guidelines that were put in place are working well, saying this year KNEC is determined to conduct credible results. “Students have studied for the last four years, so I urge them to ignore those papers being circulated in various social media channels.

The papers are fake. “The new directive of picking exam papers from containers twice a day is working very smoothly and is helping to prevent early exposure of examination papers. Those monitoring the exams are also doing a great job,” said Njengere when he oversaw the distribution of examination papers from a container in Murang’a East Sub County, Monday.
He revealed that so far, 46 cases of malpractice have been reported in the country, saying the number has no significance to taint the integrity of the exam.
“46 students from various parts of the country have been caught as they attempted to interfere with the exams. Some of the cases include having phones in examination centres or any other unauthorised materials. We thank officers and teachers manning the exams as they have quelled any attempt to leak the exams,” added the CEO.

A third-year year economist student at Zetech University was on Thursday arrested for selling fake KCPE and KCSE examination papers online.

Oscar Brighton was arrested by DCI detectives attached to Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) monitoring and surveillance unit.

According to a DCI report, Brighton was in possession of fake examination papers in hard copy and on his mobile phone.

“He had created several WhatsApp groups where candidates were asked to deposit between Sh1,600 for Humanities to Sh2,600 for Sciences,” DCI tweeted.

Brighton, who has been described by the DCI as a serial offender, is currently in custody awaiting to be charged with violation of section 28 of National Examination malpractices Act 29, 2012.

“A person who before or during an examination, gives an examination paper or material to a candidate or another person without lawful authority, commits an offense and is liable, upon conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, or a fine not exceeding one million shillings, or to both,” the Act 29 states.

Brighton was in possession of fake examination papers, while others were stored in his mobile phone.
The arrest comes just two days after two teachers were arrested for taking pictures of exam papers on the last day of KCPE.

A third suspect, an examination centre manager, was also arrested.

The three suspects are from Marsabit, Turkana and Bungoma counties.

The KCPE exam began on Monday, March 7 and ended on Wednesday, March 9, 2022.

A total of 1,225,693 candidates sat the exam across 28,248 exam centres countrywide.

The KCSE theory papers will start on Monday, March 14 and end on Friday, April 1.

A total of 831,015 candidates were registered in 10,413 centres.

Early this month, Education CS George Magoha had said the government will ensure there is no malpractice.

He said tight security will be put in place to reduce the risk of leaked question papers.

“If the school is near the containers, there is no reason to release the exams an hour before time. They can wait until it’s about 20 minutes to go,” said Magoha.
