This is probably one of the oldest careers and has existed for generations. It involves excellent attention to detail and the ability to multitask effectively.
Professionals in this field have been losing relevance in the last decades with
a number being forced to return to class to upgrade or venture into other related fields altogether.
Typically, they are responsible for transferring paper formats into computer files or database systems and also handle typing customer information provided directly into an electronic format, creating spreadsheets with a large number of figures.

ACCOUNTING, BOOKKEEPING AND PAYROLL CLERKS

Payroll clerks who are also called payroll administrators, or timekeeping clerks, focus only on the salary functions of accounting. They compute, classify, and record numerical data to keep financial records complete. At the same time, they perform any combination of routine calculating, posting, and verifying duties to obtain primary financial data for use in maintaining accounting records.
Over the years, however, the industry has seen the rise of software developments and applications capable of performing such duties effectively and in a timely manner rendering such professionals extraneous.

ASSEMBLY AND FACTORY WORKERS

Technically, an assembly worker is responsible for putting together the various parts of a particular product such as computing merchandise or an auto vehicle, whose job may
involve accumulating one set of components, or the finished product.
But with automation, it is now possible to assemble products by computer encoding which has destroyed and limited the number of personnel needed for such duties, and unless professionals upgrade such skills by use of computer skills, they stand no chance in the future.

CLIENT INFORMATION AND CUSTOMER SERVICE WORKERS

These professionals interact with customers to address their concerns, answer their questions and assist them with their needs and primarily work as call centre agents or client relations associates.
Over time, however, many businesses have advanced how to communicate with customers via email, text messaging and “frequently asked questions” sections
of corporate websites, with less personal and in-person exchanges. This online communication has proved typically fast and efficient.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND EXECUTIVE SECRETARIES

Also known as personal assistants (PAs), these individuals ideally run the diaries of the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and senior managers in an organisation as well as perform basic administrative roles like answering phone calls, booking appointments as well as handling incoming and outgoing emails on behalf of the aforementioned officials.
Such professionals also prepare correspondence, reports and records of proceedings and other specialized documentation, but their inputs are progressively losing relevance as managers and CEOs are now able to perform such duties from the comfort of their mobile phones.

BUSINESS SERVICES AND ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGERS

Administrative services managers basically oversee the managerial services of an organization, including supervising administrative staff and coordinating mail distribution, recordkeeping, and monitoring facilities.
They also perform a wide range of duties related to keeping an organization running smoothly. But trends show that their roles have been taken up by Chief Operating Officers (COOs) and Human Resources Managers (HRs) who double up in those duties besides their core respective mandates.

ACCOUNTANTS AND AUDITORS

Classically an accountant performs a day-to-day processing or recording of transactions, an while an auditor are keen on accounting accuracy, with the former mainly working for the company, while he latter works for an independent department– if within the company or externally (hired by the company to conduct an audit or instructed by the government agency to conduct an audit).
But a growing number of companies are not relying on two professionals to perform the same tasks and the effect is being felt in the industry with most individuals opting for either higher accounting skills or taking up complementary courses to boost their chances of employability.

MATERIAL RECORDING AND STOCK-KEEPING CLERKS

The core responsibilities for individuals practising in these fields include reviewing and distributing production, work, and shipment schedules; conferring with department supervisors to determine the progress of work and completion dates. They also track product information in order to keep businesses and supply chains on schedule, to ensure proper scheduling, recordkeeping, and inventory
control.
But their relevance has been replaced with big data specialists and digital transformation specialists, whose existence has helped in the optimization of operations including products and services.

GENERAL AND OPERATIONS MANAGERS

Head of departments in organisations are fast replacing the significance of general and operations managers who generally oversee operations that are too diverse and general to be classified into one area of management or administration.
Responsibilities may include formulating policies, managing daily operations, and planning the use of materials and human resources.
Their roles include formulating overall strategy, managing people and establishing policies.

POSTAL SERVICE CLERKS

Postal service is probably one of the most affected sectors hampered by the rise of electronic communication and technology, and future trends show that the industry is on its deathbed.
Postal service clerks sell products, including postage stamps and money orders. They weigh packages and mailers, apply correct postage, collect money from customers, and advise them on mailing methods. There are also mail clerks and mail machine operators who work for private organizations.
