KUCCPS: C+ Students Prior to 2016 Can Apply For Placement

It will be the first time KUCCPs will be placing students to TTCs following the Ministry of Education’s decision to mandate it with the responsibility.

Dr Wahome spelt out the roadmap for the admissions activity for the second batch of students who will join the institution to undergo training under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

She said the crucial meeting – the first between KUCCPS and the Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs) – was a major step in the agency’s preparations for the selection of primary school teacher trainees.

“We wish to inform Kenyans that we are ready for the task,” she told participants at the forum.

‘‘Under the arrangement, all colleges will be required to upload their programmes and declare their capacities on the KUCCPS portal for students to apply,’’ Wahome said.

The next placement exercise will target secondary school leavers from the year 2000 to 2021.

Until last year, the Ministry of Education was responsible for recruiting students for admission to the public primary TTCs.

Ministry of Education Director General Elyas Abdi expressed confidence that KUCCPS would deliver on its task.

The move would also allow the studentsto benefit from funding like Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and other government funds.

The 831,026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2021 candidates have until April 1 to apply for placement in universities and colleges under government sponsorship.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opened the application window yesterday.

This comes two weeks to the Form Four national examination which starts on March14 and ends on April 1.

“This is to notify school principals that the portal is now open for the 2021 application. Submit KCSE candidates’ course choices by April 1, 2022,” reads a notice by KUCCPS.

Each student will pay Sh500 for application fees.

KUCCPS recently reviewed the application criteria that will see cut-off points for joining university pegged on available accommodation and government capitation.

Overall, students have 18 choices open to them when making applications. Out of these, are six options for degree courses, four for diploma programmes, and a similar number for craft certificate options. Another four options are available for artisan certificate courses.

For degrees, candidates are expected to list their preferred four courses in the order of priority. Choice number one has three slots for the same programme (in three different universities).

The two-month application window is a wake-up call to teachers and parents amid reports that some teachers failed to guide the students through the course selection process before exams over fears that some could not meet the required grades.

Teachers are expected to assist candidates in picking the courses so as to avoid making the common mistake of selecting high-ranking and competitive courses in top universities.

However, candidates will have a chance to do the first and second course revision after KCSE results are released.

The second revision will only be applicable to candidates who do not merit any of their preferred choices.

For students who fail to secure placement, they will not pay for the second revision. However, the application fee paid at first revision will be applicable during the second revision.

According to KUCCPs, students applying for placement for the first time in the second course revision window, will pay Sh1,500

Last week KUCCPS asked 95,757 students who sat KCSE between 2020 and 2021 and qualified for placement, but haven’t enrolled, to re-apply for courses.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Mercy Wahome said those targeted are applicants for diploma, certificate and artisan courses.

Wahome said the government will sponsor all the students who will be successfully placed, including practicing professionals who wish to upgrade their skills by taking technical courses.

Acquiring Education Degree Gets Easier As KUCCPS Reviews Minimum entry requirements for degree courses https://elimupedia.com/acquiring-education-degree-gets-easier-as-kuccps-reviews-minimum-entry-requirements-for-degree-courses.html Tue, 16 Nov 2021 03:02:49 +0000 https://elimupedia.com/?p=4722 Acquiring Education Degree Gets Easier As KUCCPS Reviews Minimum entry requirements for degree courses

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), has reviewed Minimum entry requirements for degree courses and validation criteria for placement of students to universities. This decision is expected to increase the number of students qualified to join universities, though there is no significant expansion of infrastructural capacity of universities and colleges, and increase in government funding expected.

“It is my wish also that among other things, KUCCPS will consider cut-off points for joining universities to be based on available accommodation space and government capitation,” said University Education PS Simon Nabukwesi during the KUCCPS Stakeholders Forum for Validation of Placement Criteria for Degree courses.

According to Nabukwesi, the review was necessitated by introduction of new courses and dynamics in the job market.

He said the education sector has experienced reforms and developments since the last review of degree placement criteria in 2017.

“The implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) has now taken off and it is time to align higher education and prepare it for CBC graduates,” said Nabukwesi.

The PS revealed that students in secondary schools will have to undergo a sensitisation programme for on selection of university courses based on their talents and competences.

“You identify talents in students and lead them to choose the courses that suit them best for right training. Many schools do not have the booklets and do not bother to look for them to guide the students,” he added.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Mercy Wahome said the criteria will recognise areas such as agriculture and education where many students are disadvantaged by the minimum subject requirements to enroll in universities.

“The review augers well with the direction we are taking with the competency-based curriculum (CBC) because we are focusing on competences and talents of students in selection of courses,” said Wahome.

The review of selection criteria is also expected to address the clashes between professional bodies and the Commission for University Education (CUE) on minimum subject requirements to join universities.
