Teachers who failed to activate their TSC emails are yet to receive more punishments with the teachers’ service commission (TSC) now blocking them from participating in the ongoing 2019-2021 wealth declaration exercise.

TSC maintains, through its circular on wealth declaration that teachers who refused to activate their office 365 emails will not declare their wealth, implying that they will be subjected to a fine of upto ksh. 1,000,000 according to the constitution.

This latest move has sent teachers who never activated their emails into panic mode, and a feeling of not knowing what to expect next.

“The declaration can only be accessed by individuals who have activated their official @mwalimu.tsc.go.ke email address. This will be vital for user credibility, setting, accessing, and resetting individual passwords for the declaration as applicable. A copy of the submitted declaration will automatically be sent to the teacher’s email,” reads a circular signed by Nancy Macharia.

All TSC employed teachers, interns and heads were expected to activate their emails, with a projected move of migrating to digital data management rather than the traditional hard copy file management.

Heads of institution were also expected to open a separate email for head of institution, which would enhance continuity in case another head comes in.

Outlook365 is an email platform where a user can receive and send emails to enhance communication. Through this platform, teachers will be able to:

• Receive emails from TSC concerning the progress of their transfers and promotions among others.
• Make enquires from various TSC departments that they will need services from.
• Communicate with their county directors and sub county directors
• Communicate with teachers from their counties and other counties in Kenya.
• Make and add members to groups i.e. members of a department in a school, teachers of a particular county or sub-county or school, games teachers, science and engineering fair, drama groups, music groups among others. This can be done at any level.

Office365 on the other hand is an e-platform associated with outlook365 but designed to enhance storage, editing and access of documents for remote learning, virtual learning, virtual meetings, ICT integration among others.

Through office365, teachers can:

• Store and edit their teaching documents like lesson notes, schemes of work, lesson plans, progress records, lesson observation forms, lesson attendance sheets, among others.
• Share the above documents with other teachers
• Create teams for networking and sharing
• Live stream videos during class lessons
• Store ICT materials like videos for ICT integrated learning

Outlook365 and office365 are linked together and the same username and password can be used to access them. It is also possible to switch from outlook365 to office365 without having to open another tab or logging out.

The teachers’ service commission, TSC, is likely to extend the deadline for TSC email activation, which had been set to be April 30^th 2021. This is after it emerged that s considerable number of the email addresses are not recognized by outlook365, thus are not working. Some of the temporary passwords too were being rejected even after applying the keyboard case rules to key in the right cases. What this means is that the affected teachers will not only be unable to get email notifications, but also to upload the documents required in office365.

It has also been realized that majority of the interns and the newly employed teachers have been left out in the email activation exercise since they have not been captured in the TSC data system and TMIS.

A senior official argued that the initial date line might not work for the affected teachers till the faults in the system are fixed. She hinted at a possibility of extending the email activation exercise by at least two weeks.

“Extension of the deadline will enhancing fixing of these errors in email activation and also give defaulters ample time to activate their email accounts, lest they face dire consequences,” said the official who sought anonymity.

In the March circular, which directed teachers to activate their emails, it was clearly captured that after the 30^th April deadline, no currently employed teacher will be allowed access into the email activation portal.

The circular also stated that that the email will be the means of communication between the teachers and TSC and that teachers will also use its features to engage in remote learning.

“Further, the Commission has introduced an e-platform for official emails, virtual meetings and remote learning. The platform targets all teachers employed by the Commission and those undergoing internship programmes. The platform will be used in the following instances: –

1. a) For official communication between the Commission and teachers including transmission of official letters, Circulars, Pay-slips and responses to teachers’ inquiries amongst others.
2. b) To promote the usage of e-learning at no cost.
3. c) To support and promote the usage of virtual meetings. Institutions can therefore use the platform to hold virtual meetings while teachers will be able to create peer groups to carry out learning activities including mentoring and coaching.” NEXT.

A couple of months ago, teachers were instructed by the teachers service commission to activate their emails. The 90 day exercise is ending on 30^th April 2021, beyond which no more email activations will be accepted for the teachers who are currently in service. A section of teachers who complied simply did it without foreseeing the logics in acquiring a TSC provided email, yet TSC already had their emails. Furthermore, no one questioned why TSC opted for Microsoft outlook365 or Microsoft office365.

Microsoft outlook365 is very unique and advanced compared to other email platforms like yahoo and Gmail. Some of its unique features include;

• Student progress records and marks for Cats exams. These Will be uploaded in excel
• Prepared class videos for ICT integration. These will be uploaded under stream.
• Sharing of reports in sway.

Everything done by the teacher daily will be loaded in files on His/ her email. The Microsoft Email shall be like a data base to store the activities of the teacher on daily basis. Matters Transfer, Promotion, Discipline, Appointment Shall be pegged on the data as uploaded on the email account. teachers who will not have complied will like face these consequences.
