When Covid-19 struck, schools were closed and the education calendar was disrupted. KCPE and KCSE candidates were unsure of when they would sit for their exams and some schools rolled out online classes to ensure they completed the syllabus in good time.

Embakasi East Babu Owino took it upon himself to aid students and offered Mathematics and Chemistry classes for free on his social media platforms.

At first, the move attracted a lot of criticism, some accusing the legislator of trying to ‘sanitise’ his name but this did not deter him.

He selected a few topics that he deemed examinable and glided through them with ease, well, this was expected as he holds a degree in Actuarial Science.

The classes, which were often conducted on Fridays, soon attracted more people and Babu took students through Chemistry classes, dissecting organic chemistry.

On Monday, KCSE top candidate Robinson Simiyu acknowledged the work of Babu, saying he benefitted a lot from the classes.

Although Murang’a High School had already rolled out online classes for their students, Robinson stated that Babu’s Mathematics and Chemistry classes came in handy.

“I would love to appreciate Babu Owino because he went a step further and started teaching.

“I remember his Mathematics and Chemistry lessons…they really helped. Our school had online lessons but there are students out there who did not have that privilege. I benefitted from the lessons and I believe there are many others who did,” he said.

KNEC Examiners to meet their cost of travelling to the marking centres- How to Pay https://elimupedia.com/knec-examiners-to-meet-their-cost-of-travelling-to-the-marking-centres-how-to-pay.html Thu, 08 Apr 2021 06:28:09 +0000 https://elimupedia.com/?p=2783 KNEC Examiners to meet their cost of travelling to the marking centres

The Kenya national examinations council has confirmed that all examiners will meet their costs of travelling to Nairobi for the national marking exercise.

This contradicts the statement KNEC made earlier on that the examiners will be ferried using school buses fueled by KNEC itself.

In a new twist of events, KNEC has directed the deputy county commissioners to liase with the subcounty director of education and the TSC subcounty director of education to organize how the invited examiners will move from the subcounty to the county headquarters and subsequently to the marking centre using the cheapest available means. The directive, signed by Mercy Karogo, the acting KNEC chief executive officer, has informed clearly that each person travelling to the marking centre will meet his or her own travel costs.

The examiners will be expected to collect their travel passes from the county commissioners to facilitate smooth travelling. To be considered for the passes, the examiners will have to present their national identification cards, invitation letters, and the invitation SMS received from KNEC.

Once they have received details of all the invited examiners from their counties, the county commissioners will sort them into their respective subject papers and marking venues. They will then negotiate with a transport company, which will release buses or shuttles at a subsidized rate. Each vehicle is expected to carry examiners travelling to the same venue, or marking a common paper. The examiners will be required pay their fare through their county commissioners or TSC sub county directors for faster booking.

The examiners are advised to get a COVID-19 jab before traveling to Nairobi. They are also expected to carry enough masks, preferably disposable masks that will serve them for the entire marking exercise, which lasts at most 15 days.

The markers will start reporting to their respective marking centres from 24th April 2021.

Magoha Gets Mad at Machakos police boss For Using NYS at exam centres https://elimupedia.com/magoha-gets-mad-at-machakos-police-boss-for-using-nys-at-exam-centres.html Wed, 31 Mar 2021 03:04:55 +0000 http://elimupedia.com/?p=2734 Magoha Gets Mad at Machakos police boss For Using NYS at exam centres

Education Cabinet Secretary prof. George Magoha on Tuesday lashed out at police bosses in Machakos County for dispatching National Youth Service (NYS) trainees to man the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examinations.

Magoha  caused Drama during the opening of examinations container in Machakos upon realizing  that some of the exam centre managers were accompanied by youth in NYS uniform to collect examinations materials.

He quarreled the police bosses in the region and insisted that no one from the NYS should man the examinations.

The minister maintained that only commissioned officers who are armed should be allowed to man the test.

This is the second time Prof Magoha has raised an issue with the manning of examinations in Machakos County.

While the general understanding has been that the examinations had strained the police service and that some of the officers are coincidentally engaged in other assignments, Prof Magoha said that the police service had assured the government that it has enough police officers to man all examination centres.

During the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, the minister lamented that some centres in Machakos were being manned by a single police officer while the government had paid for at least two police officers.

“There are reasonable improvements but we must still reemphasize the issue of security and integrity for our examinations. These are irreducible minimums. We must have at least two armed security men per centre manager,” he said after overseeing the distribution of examination materials at Machakos town.

He said the move is meant to rule out cheating in the examinations and insisted that the government will not relent in curbing any attempts to cheat.

He directed those monitoring the examination to be extra vigilant to ensure that no cheating take place.

Magoha Reveals plans By Candidates To Cheat in exams Using Face Masks https://elimupedia.com/magoha-reveals-plans-by-candidates-to-cheat-in-exams-using-face-masks.html Thu, 11 Mar 2021 04:06:04 +0000 http://elimupedia.com/?p=2592 Magoha Reveals plans By Candidates To Cheat in exams Using Face Masks

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has revealed his fears that some candidates are planning to use face masks to cheat in the upcoming national examinations.

Magoha alleges that some candidates are planning to write answers on the masks which are part of the safety measures put in place by the government to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“We know that some of you are planning to use masks to cheat. Do not make such an attempt because we shall frisk you and if caught, it’s up to you,” Magoha said.

He warned the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates that the ministry was aware of the ‘innovative’ methods they are planning to use to cheat.

Magoha’s comments came as the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) released tough measures the candidates must adhere to before the start of examinations.

Guidelines released by Knec require that supervisors ensure candidates are searched thoroughly as they enter examination rooms even after visiting the washrooms.

“Candidates should lower their masks during identification as this can be used as an avenue for impersonation. Tougher measures will also be implemented during frisking of the candidates,” the guidelines read.

All candidates will be searched after temperature checks and after sanitising- before every test.

The invigilators will also be required to wear face masks and sanitise their hands before and after searches.

However, during the entire examination session, all candidates will be required to wear face masks.

“Candidates must wear face masks properly throughout the examination. Candidates with hearing impairment sitting KCSE exams may be required to remove their masks when taking the practical signing examination,” the Knec rules say.

Similarly, invigilators and school staff will be required to wear masks and shall only be removed when signing candidates with hearing impairment.

Speaking during a meeting at the Kenya School of Government last week, Magoha also expressed fears over the possible use of masks to beat security safeguards during the examinations.

“We are aware that as we plan for the effective administration of exams, others are busy planning how to cheat,” Magoha said.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has informed the public that KCPE and KCSE examinations, which are timetabled to begin in March 2021, are ready.

Initially, the KCPE and KCSE exams had been scheduled to begin from October 27th 2020 and November 4th 2020 respectively.

The exams were, however, postponed to 2021, owing to unavoidable disruptions on the academic calendar, which were caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

Professor Magoha’s latest revelations about KCPE and KCSE examinations have brought immeasurable hope and joy to both parents and teachers. They have been assured by the CS that finally their learners will sit for the exams.  The KCSE and KCPE exams will also be simple and straightforward to cushion the candidates, who are yet to recover from the effects of covid-19.

“The examinations are now ready and are very simple. Let parents encourage their children to continue preparing. I must also applaud the teachers for the manner in which they have covered the time table,” said Prof Magoha during a visit to Roysambu Primary School.

“Most learners, including candidates, never touched their books during the long holiday. Even after partial reopening of schools, the candidates’ minds were still at home and they could not concentrate in class. At least a simpler exam can help them score better grades. We hate seeing them fail,” said Mr. Kariuki, a teacher who doubles up as a parent.

Magoha reminded parents and learners that the official school reopening date is still 4th January 2021 and the government is determined to ensure 100 per cent preparedness.

“There may be challenges when we re-open, but we shall altogether deal with them as they come. This is a very serious issue and people should stop politicizing it because Covid-19 is here to stay and we must adapt,” he said.

Magoha further said the Government would provide protective masks for approximately three million learners strictly from poor families.

“We shall not provide masks to everybody because I strongly believe a large number of families can afford Sh100 to buy masks,” he said.

He said boarding learners whose parents might not be able to pay school fees due to the economic impact of Covid-19 should be allowed to continue learning as modalities of payment is being sorted.next
